Nong Khai Saturday Night Market

If you’re fortunate enough to be staying in Nong Khai on a Saturday after returning to Thailand from visiting the Thai embassy for a visa application in Vientiane Laos, or just coming from Vientiane to Thailand – then Saturday is one of the best and liveliest nights to be in Nong Khai.

Open: Saturday night
Address: Rim Kong Rd (Mekong Riverfront), Nai Mueang, Mueang Nong Khai District, Nong Khai 43000

I wrote an article about the Tha Sadet Market to give it a mention as a place worth stopping by while travellers are on their Nong Khai travels. The Saturday night market is much more of an attraction in Nong Khai and fun.

The Saturday night Nong Khai market is held along the Mekong riverfront (see Tha Sadet Market on the map, and you’re there), and the location – especially in the cooler months (Nov – Feb) is really beautiful. The sunsets are a must-see…

The market sells all sorts of items, from clothing (cheap and good t-shirts) to snacks, and other bric-a-brac items.

Food
The market is a great place to try out Thai food and the various snacks made in Thailand. Restaurants can be found along the riverfront and places to have a beer, so if the market food doesn’t interest you, you have other options.

Entertainment
The local entertainment is something really special. So many Thai people come here on a Saturday night to do their own entertainment thing for the people, and it’s really impressive for a small town/city.

Entertainment such as break dancing, guitar bands, traditional Thai dancing and other activities are found all along the riverside. As with most places in Thailand, there are a few places giving foot massages for a couple of hundred baht.

It’s best to get there before sunset. See the sunset, visit the market and then maybe grab a bite to eat and a beer locally after.

It can get very busy like any other market in Thailand, and Thai people don’t rush about, so wear your hat of patience.

If you’re a visitor to Thailand and have not seen much of local Thai culture, then this is a great place to experience it.
