Safety Tips – Dangers and Annoyances

Much of the advice needed to stay safe in Thailand boils down to the common sense used in our home countries and other travel destinations that we’re more familiar with.

However, over here in SE Asia the laws, customs and various dangers and annoyances need some particular attention to prevent serious problems or even avoidable annoyances (See Thailand Dangers and Annoyances ).

Drinking In Thailand – Do’s and Dont’s

One thing you’re never short of in Thailand is a place to booze………and it’s a heck of a lot of fun. While it’s a must for many to have a glass or two, this is where a huge amount of issues arise for tourists, and it usually involves more than a glass or two (I am no saint and not preaching here, just experience).

Tourists must keep in mind that Thailand is mostly a kind of conservative country and their style of drinking is not quite what it is in the west (some like to drink, don’t get me wrong).

In terms of safety this is where the cultural stuff and fun can conflict, and anywhere in the world sees its fair share of conflicts related to alcohol being involved (Do’s & Dont’s of Drinking in Thailand).

Food Safety In Thailand – Is Thai Food Healthy?

If you don’t fear the chili then one thing you’re gonna love about Thailand is the food. Delicious food can be found everywhere in Thailand, from cheap street food and food carts to top notch restaurants.

Most people don’t get food related issues like food poisoning in Thailand. However, the risks or the chance of having a gut problem is quite a bit higher than many western countries.

Transport

A visit to Thailand may require you to take taxi, bus, minivan, boat, train, tuk tuk or plane.

Some modes of transport carry a larger weight of risk than others including, buses, minivans, taxis and boats. Most often it depends on the safety level of the driver and this is questionable at times (plenty of great cautious drivers in Thailand though – I don’t want to criticize all of them)

Cultural Differences

While culture does not seem to relate to safety in a sense it does. Knowing enough about the culture of Thailand may prevent offending a person, and although Thai people will know you are foreign and excuse your lack of knowledge it’s still a good idea to know how things tick in Thailand.

There are a few things to learn about Thai culture and customs that will ensure your stay in Thailand is even better than you expected. Check out some simple do’s and dont’s… (Thailand Culture).
