Travel Money In Thailand – Tips & Advice for Tourists on Dealing with Cash

-- Last Updated on August 25, 2022 by Jonesy

Thailand continues to be a country where westerners can get great value for money in terms of eating out, accommodation, transport, and other aspects of expenditure that in our home countries doesn’t always go a long way.

Baht is the Thai currency with notes of 1000, 500, 100, 50, and 20 THB, and then the small change (similar to pennies or cents) of 10, 5, 2, and 1 are baht coins. Thailand also has smaller currency named satang that’s not even equivalent to most western currencies (it’s too small).

First things first…….what’s it all gonna cost?

Thailand Travel Budget Costs

Thailand welcomes and caters for all budgets and travelers. The budget/backpacker, budget – mid-range, mid-range and above.

You can holiday here in Thailand on a shoestring. It all depends on the quality of creature comforts, food, and how much you would like to do. The real deal, as I see it, is found in the mid-range, as we really do get our monies worth and top quality (See Travel Budget Advice).

Next, what about converting my cash and getting the best bang for my buck?

There are various ways of converting your money and getting the most out of your hard earned cash. There’s no need to exchange in your home country first (much worse exchange rate).

Not only is the exchange rate worse in your home country…….there’s no need at all if you have some of your own currency or an ATM debit card. Bringing cash over gets the best deal (at least to get you started) with plenty of exchange shops offering good rates. (See Thailand Currency Exchange Tips).

ATM Guide & Tips

Krungsri Thailand Atm Machines
Krungsri Thailand ATM machines offer high withdrawal amounts

You’ll have no issues using and finding ATM’s and there are ways to make withdrawals cost less. A charge is made from the ATM in Thailand and you should avoid the extra cost’s on the conversion of your own currency.

It’s worth noting the largest amount that can be taken out on each transaction, or rather the best bank ATM’s to use. This will save on the ATM fees (See the ATM Guide Here).

Super Rich – Bangkok

If you are spending time in Bangkok then using SuperRich to exchange money is a great option. These are located in the central area of BKK and offer the best exchange rate.

If you are local to a branch and need to convert a decent amount of cash then these are a very good option. It’s not really worth going out of your way though if it’s smaller amounts (See SuperRich Silom).
