One thing the city of Nong Khai is not short of is temples. It is said that the city is one of the places in Thailand with the highest amount of temples in Nong Khai per head of the population.
If you ride a bicycle or motorbike along the riverfront from the Tha Sadet market and up to the Buddhist Chedi (Phra That), you will see a temple down nearly every Soi (rd).
Nong Khai Temples To Visit
While there are many temples in Nong Khai there are only certain places that are of interest to travellers.
Wat Pho Chai
Wat Pho Chai is the most popular head temple of Nong Khai. The artwork inside is quite impressive and beautiful, and well worth seeing. Weekends can become very busy with Thai worshipers coming from the province to visit (Wat Pho Chai).
Wat Lam Duam
Wat Lam Suam is the temple with the Buddha statue that is seated watching over the Mekong river to Laos. The area and the temple here (near Naga Heads) is worth visiting at sunrise and sunset when it’s more beautiful and cooler. Wat Lam Duan Temple »
Sala Keoku
Sala Keoku is an amazing sculpture park and Buddhist temple for worshipers. It’s one of the main attractions for travellers staying in the city of Nong Khai. Try cycling there if you can as I have previously, or take a tuk tuk. Sala Keoku in Nong Khai »
Phra That (Chedi)
The Phra That Buddhist Chedi/Stupa is at the other end of the Rim Kong Alley along the riverside. Here you can also view what is called the sunken Chedi. There is nothing spectacular but it’s interesting and it has history and mythical meanings for Thai people. Phra That Chedi »
Other Temples
The above I would say are the most popular to visit. For others, you can use the common map used for travellers around Nong Khai from Mut Mee guesthouse which many guesthouses and hotels give visitors.
Beautiful Temples Outside Nong Khai Town
The best temples to see are outside the town if you are able to arrange transport. Wat Pha Phu Kon is quite remarkable and unique, which is well worth a trip to visit. Wat Hin Mak Peng is the closest of these below.
Wat Pa Phu Kon
Wat Pa Phu Kon, also known as the forest temple is an outstanding place situated in the province of Udon Thani, but slightly closer to Nong Khai.
Wat Pha Tak Suea
Wat Pha Tak Suea (skywalk) is located within the beautiful mountainous and forest areas of the Nong Khai province in Thailand.
Wat Hin Mak Peng
Wat Hin Mak Peng was really an add-on to the Pha Tak Suea and Pa Phu Kon trip, but still a great temple, especially the surroundings.
That’s me templed out……enjoy Nong Khai’s religious, spiritual and attractive side of life.

I’m Jonesy. The one responsible for whole lot of things including having this Thailand site up and running. I first arrived in Thailand in 2008 and being a web developer it made sense to create a website and write some stuff about my second home. Enjoy your travels!
