Sukhumvit Soi 4 in Bangkok –Brief Guide & What to Expect

Outside Nana Plaza Sukhumvit Soi 4 In Bangkok

Sukhumvit Soi 4 is primarily a haven for boozing and partying in the company of hundreds of attractive Thai ladies and girls –there to serve and entertain the crowds of debauchery-thirsty folk.

Soi 4 is located right at the start of the Nana area of Sukhumvit Rd in Bangkok. While this entertainment scene and environment begins at Soi 4, it continues past the Phrom Phong area of Sukhumvit Rd.

However–

Soi 4 and the famous Soi Cowboy (Soi 23) are full-on entertainment areas that condense a lot of adult entertainment and boozing in one location compared to other locations along Sukhumvit Rd.

Let’s take a look at what can be found on Soi 4 and what a new curious foreigner can expect.

Upon Entering Soi 4 –it gets lively quickly

The beginning of fun starts –well, right at the beginning of the Soi, as soon as you enter. On the right within view is the Nana Hotel.

Expect crowds of people fighting for some pavement space between the street food sellers and people. It is normal around busy entertainment and market areas in Thailand.

On the left, you have a couple of bars with seating for a view of the street and with Hooters on the opposite side, a bit further up. Then continuing a few metres, brings you to the legendary Nana Plaza adult entertainment, which you might want to (agogo) enter inside.

Just after the plaza, Soi 4 has –more bars with more girls.

The bottom floor of the plaza has some normal beer bars within the centre among the go-go bars on the outer edge where people drink and enjoy a drink with friends without entering a gogo bar.

The next floors are where the action all goes on, and you can expect to find around 30 bars, including a good selection of ladyboy bars.

Drinks are more expensive than normal beer bars and cost around 150 + THB each, and then a drink for a hostess lady, if you choose to buy her a drink, will be around 250 THB.

Other Bars Along Soi 4

The entrance of Soi 4 has enough to please many, from those who wish to people-watch –with a beer in their hand –to those who need something saucier and with less clothes involved and more body to view. However, the Soi does have more bars even though it calms down somewhat.

There are a few smaller beer bars where you can play pool and a couple of expat bars like Chequers, the English Pub/Bar.

Only 120 metres from the start of the Soi 4 beer bar gauntlet is Fitzgeralds Irish Pub, formerly known as Hanrahans that serves international beers and food. If this Irish Pub is not enough for your St Patricks Day then you can head 30 metres along and check out The Blarney Stone –another Irish Pub & Restaurant.

A little further up from the Irish Pubs is a small complex with a few bars and restaurants. One of the Hillary group bars (Hillary 1) is here and has live bands playing later in the evening.

You can expect to pay around 250 THB and up for a meal at these pub and bar restaurant establishments.

This area is Nana, so you can expect to find a selection of Indian restaurants serving the world’s favourite curries.

You can also find some reasonably priced and cheap Thai places and street food options along the Soi and further down near Sukhumvit 6 Alley. Around an area like this, where many Thai people work, you will find it easy to find Thai food, and cheap.

Massage Shops on Soi 4

Where there are beer bars, you will find a good selection of massage shops –it is standard. This type of area comes with the usual WELCOME MASSAGE from the ladies once you have walked down past the entrance of Nana Plaza.

If you like more happiness at the end of your massage, you’ll find that here, as well as just a good traditional relaxing foot massage and professional spa-type experiences.

Other Useful Places on Soi 4

Soi 4 has a few pharmacies located along the road. However, if you need specific medication they do not offer on Soi 4, several other pharmacies within the Nana area on Sukhumvit Rd will likely help you.

There are a couple of money exchange shops on the Soi –one right next to the Bus Stop Pub. However, there are many others on Sukhumvit Nana, and if you are planning to exchange larger amounts with bigger note denominations, then a quick walk down to Vasu Exchange (near Nana BTS) will give you the best rates.

Of course, 7-11 convenience stores are always open 24 hours a day within walking distance on Soi 4.

Staying on Soi 4 – Hotels & Accommodation

While Soi 4 might not be everyone’s idea of a great place to stay in Bangkok or Sukhumvit, others return to the Soi and area year after year to be close to the Nightlife action.

There are many hotels, guesthouses and accommodation options along Soi 4, and as soon as you enter the road, you’ll see Nana Hotel on the right-hand side.

Soi 4 has an Ibis Hotel, Novotel and Citrus Suites, which are popular and other options along the Soi that will cost around 1000 – 1500 THB a night.

Many options surround Soi 4, including the Landmark, Marriot and Double Tree by Hilton; if you are looking for something a little more upmarket and very close to Soi 4.

Frequently Asked Questions –about Soi 4

Is Soi 4 what they call the red light district?

Yes. Soi 4 is an area, and other parts of Nana are what some will call the red light district despite it having no red-lit windows like Amsterdam. The area has girls that work in the sex industry, and you might see these offering services along the Soi.

Is it safe on Soi 4?

Anywhere with a lot of tourists and drinking going on will always have some risk attached to it. However, a lot of the time, things just run smoothly, but some people do get way too drunk, and fights can kick off.

I have been to Soi 4 many times and continue to visit at times, and I have never had an issue or seen anything bad happen.

You might get approached or spoken to by taxi drivers, tuk-tuk drivers, ladyboys, massage ladies, or watch sellers, and that’s about as problematic as it gets. The minor annoyance soon goes if you just walk on by or say a polite no thanks, and this comes with the territory.

Ladyboys will approach men, but again, just be polite and walk on. Don’t get aggressive as you could regret this –you do not want to see a 6 ft ladyboy losing her ***T.

You might want to keep an eye on your beer bar bill as sometimes issues can arise.

Is the location of Soi 4 convenient in Bangkok?

Nana Bts Sign At Skytrain Station In Bangkok

Soi 4 is only 350 metres from Nana BTS (Skytrain) station). Ploen Chit BTS station is the next station before Sukhumvit Road, and then Asok BTS station near Terminal 21 is the next station along Sukhumvit Rd.

Other transport to and from this area is inconvenient because of the heavy traffic, especially during rush hours. Therefore, using the BTS is the best option!

The BTS at Nana also links passengers to the Silom line of the Skytrain and the Sukhumvit MRT (underground) station.
