Nong Khai bus station is central to the town and not too far from the main tourist and hotel/guesthouse area.
This is the bus station for all major bus routes from Nong Khai to other places in the province and Thailand, including Bangkok.
Address: 910/128-129, Moo 10, Soi Sansoen, Prachak Road, Tambon Nai Mueang, Amphoe Mueang Nong Khai, Nong Khai, 43000
Nong Khai bus station is the same as other stations in Thailand, with cheaper government buses running, private companies, and minivan services. If comfort is important then the private companies are best suited.
Nong Khai Popular Bus Routes
The bus station is mainly used by Thai people although many foreign travelers pass through often on their travels. Here are some popular journeys taken from the bus station in Nong Khai.
Chiang Mai
There are no direct flights or trains from Nong Khai station, which makes the bus journey an option for some travelers, although you can fly from Udon Thani.
Sukesa tour agency departs 7pm daily from Nong Khai, and takes approximately 12 hours to arrive in Chiang Mai. You can book online here or at the bus station and tickets cost around 900 THB.
Bangkok
Bangkok is the main bus taken for travelers from Nong Khai. I would go with the train to BKK rather than take a bus, but others use the buses because they’re cheaper (VIP approx 500THB).
The company that runs this service is Budsarakham Tour which departs daily at 8.05pm and takes 9 hrs 20 mins to arrive in Bangkok, Mor Chit station. You can book and check ticket availability out online here or book at the station.
Udon Thani
Udon Thani is the next city to Nong Khai and the nearest airport. Buses and minivans do run frequently from the bus station, however, most people will just ask their guesthouse or hotel to arrange this, and you’re conveniently picked up from the hotel.
Other Nong Khai Buses
There are many other government and local buses, and minivans heading out of Nong Khai into other neighboring provinces and further out of the town. You would need to inquire about these at the station and be prepared for longer travel times because of the number of times local buses have to stop.
Other major destinations within Thailand such as Phuket, Ayutthaya, Pattaya, Chiang Rai, and others will require changeovers as there are no direct buses available that I am aware of.
An easy way to check buses and other transport options (excluding government buses) is to search and book companies like 12go.asia. You can also book tickets with them if needed.
Booking At The Station
If you are planning to make a booking at the station for onward travel from Nong Khai for the above destinations excluding Udon Thani, you’ll need to go to the private tour operator desks as shown in the photo below.
Inside The Station
Bus stations in Thailand are all quite standard. You will find plenty of seating and a shop to buy snacks and refreshments.
Transport to and from Nong Khai Bus Station
Tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis are available outside the bus station and a convenient price table notice is provided. If you get a good tuk-tuk driver that speaks English well – you might want to take their number for any transport that you may require around Nong Khai to see the attractions and things to do.
Tuk tuks are available around town if you need to get to the station and don’t want to walk. A tuk-tuk will cost you around 60 THB.
