I have known about Mut Mee guesthouse for some time and never considered staying there. When I had seen the low pricing online (250 THB) I imagined it was just a backpackers place (it is and isn’t).
On this occasion I booked a nights stay in a room (superior double 1100 THB) to review Mut Mee for this and see who it’s suitable for.
Rooms at Mut Mee Guesthouse
Mut Mee has various rooms on offer including a basic fan and shared bathroom room, family sized room, standard (double – twin), and superior (double – twin). All have similarities with the difference being the more you pay the better equipped the room is (i.e, air con – fridge etc.).
The double superior i booked was great and a good size with a decent bathroom. I love the traditional wooden look and feel of these type of places.
Everything was as a clean as it could be. Fridge for my water, kettle for my tea and coffee, plenty of daylight inside and a lovely balcony sitting area with a table outside.
There’s a mosquito net within the room that may need to be used at times. This type of home or building in Thailand will be prone to mosquitoes getting inside especially with a large garden area. This is normal and cannot be avoided completely, but it should not be an issue when using the mosquito net.
The walls are slightly thin for myself. This is only an issue because i chant (Buddhist chanting) twice a day and can be loud, so i have to tone it down for the neighbors and don’t enjoy it. The normal sounds of the TV, talking loudly and coming in and out of the room can be heard but it’s no issue at all for me (it’s a tourist guesthouse, not a silent retreat).
Hotel & Facilities
The guesthouse area is very tranquil with a lovely peaceful garden right next to the Mekong river. There are plenty of places to sit outside and food can be ordered from the restaurant.
Restaurant, Food & Drinks
Ordering food and drinks from the restaurant is quite unique. Each room has a book that orders are placed inside and any drinks you personally take from the fridge are added into the book. It’s kind of self service, and you pay the bill when you check out.
The restaurant food is not expensive and tasty. I only ordered a tom yam plaa (fish soup) and stir fried veg and it was really nice. They have breakfast options including cereal and yogurt for the health conscious traveler.
Other Facilities
Within the grounds there is a massage area, a yoga and meditation room and cheap bicycles can be hired for the day.
Wifi: Wifi as with most hotels is free. I could not get a good signal from the room.
Staff – Service
After i checked in and went down to the restaurant to get a bite to eat. Julian (the owner) came and explained how i order food and drinks, and gave a great explanation of everything else he could advise me about. I was also given a map of Nong Khai. Really helpful guy.
All other staff seemed friendly enough although i did manage to upset one lady in the morning because i wanted to check out early at 7.30 am. I was supposed to check out (pay) the night before if i was checking out early which is clearly stated on the notices (lots of notices) at the front of the reception area. She was quite rude and spoke in Thai, not realizing i can understand and speak some Thai, but i was at fault and a young guy just checked me out with no problems. Maybe she was having a bad morning…all is forgiven!
Overall – Suitable For….
Overall Mut Mee Guesthouse is a great place with older wooden style rooms, very clean, great & cheap restaurant, and the garden area is lovely. Location is also ideal and close to all that’s required for a night or two in Nong Khai.
It seems perfect for backpackers and travelers of Thailand . It’s also quite a good choice for solo travelers that may want to hook up and chat with other travelers.
Not sure it’s the best choice for some expats staying in Nong Khai and have Thai wives or girlfriends. I could be wrong but that’s just my feeling and thoughts based on experience over the years (oh and I’m married to a Thai).
I’m Jonesy. The one responsible for whole lot of things including having this Thailand site up and running. I first arrived in Thailand in 2008 and being a web developer it made sense to create a website and write some stuff about my second home. Enjoy your travels!
