The Nong Khai tobacco fields & farming is not really a Nong Khai attraction as such that you see in guide books, however, I wanted to bring a little attention to them as they’re so beautiful to view.
I was fortunate to be on a day trip out of the city and further into the Nong Khai province to see these tobacco farms and fields. We stopped off to check them out.
We were able to walk around a farm and see the workers working on the fields and chopping the leaves, then laying the chopped leaves out in the sun for curing.
The villagers depend on tobacco farming each year for supporting them financially among other crops farmed. They have had difficulties or rather concerns about laws and the future of tobacco farming as mentioned here.
January – March is the growing and harvesting season of the tobacco. It’s really beautiful to see and I wish I had the time to take more photos to show off the views.
Getting there: The tobacco village and fields are found on both sides of the highways 242 and 211 from Nong Khai town Mueang to Amphoe Tha Bo. The Mekong river runs parallel to the fields. It’s about 30km from Nong Khai town (car, motorcycle or tuk-tuk).
I’m Jonesy. The one responsible for whole lot of things including having this Thailand site up and running. I first arrived in Thailand in 2008 and being a web developer it made sense to create a website and write some stuff about my second home. Enjoy your travels!
