Visiting Nong Khai Museum

Established in 2001, the Nong Khai Museum is the place to find out about the history of Nong Khai that’s situated local to the city centre and close to the tourist area.

Getting there: Approximately 1km from the Tha Sadat market area, on the Mee Chai Road. 10 minute walk or 40 THB tuk tuk.

While it’s not quite the museums of London or Paris it’s quite interesting to see the artifacts and some history about Nong Khai.

Nong Khai Museum Useful To Know Stuff

When I visited I was about to leave because I arrived and nobody was there and I thought it was closed, until I just tried to open a door, and I was in.

The museum does not have a curator there so you just go inside one of the many doors and switch a light on and browse the artifacts and pictures. It had a bit of an eerie feeling inside which was probably because I wasn’t sure I should be in there, but it is fine to go inside and I didn’t spot any ghosts.

There are some explanations in English and Thai on plaques for the rooms and the displays. The history and explanation of the Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants that fled the Indo-China war in 1942 is interesting, as you can see how this has influenced the selling of goods and restaurants in Nong Khai.

Worth Visiting?

As mentioned above “it’s not quite the museums of London or Paris”, but if you have spare time on your hands it’s worth checking out. And, for those who love anything about history, they should find it much more interesting.

The uniqueness of it being so quiet and almost closed made it interesting for me. I was the curator, visitor and ghost all at once.

You’ll only need 10 – 15 minutes to walk around inside to look around at the displays.
